No Condemnation?

In a world often marked by judgment and condemnation, Jesus offers a radical message of grace and forgiveness.1 This story, found in the Gospel of John, illustrates the depth of God's love and His willingness to redeem even the most fallen.

A woman caught in sin was brought to Jesus (John 8:11) . A group of people who thought they were perfect wanted to punish her. They brought her to Jesus to trap Him, to test Him on how He would judge this issue. They didn’t know, the Jesus they were questioning is the Son of God, the one true Judge of all creation.

The woman was very scared. She knew she had sinned and according to the Law of Moses (Lev 20), the people wanted to kill her by stoning her. But she didn’t know who Jesus was. She didn’t know that He was the one who came to save people from sin. She didn’t know that He alone could save her and set her free.

When it was time, everyone was waiting to see what Jesus would do. He stood up and said, “Let the person who has never sinned throw the first stone.” As soon as Jesus spoke, a hush fell over the crowd. Jesus, the only righteous and sinless one present, was the only one who could justly throw the stone in judgment on her. The accusers, their faces flushed with guilt, their hearts heavy with conviction, one by one, dropped their stones and began to slink away. Soon, only two remained: Jesus, the sinless Righteous One, and the woman, the accused.

Jesus stood up and asked the woman, “Where are the people who were accusing you? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.” (Romans 8:1)

How could Jesus forgive the woman without condemning her? Because He was going to take her place on the cross, paying the penalty for her sin. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Jesus died the death that she deserved. In the same way, Jesus climbed the cross for each one of us. He took upon Himself the death we deserved, so that we could receive the life we never deserved, freely given to all who believe in Him.

The Bible says in Romans 5:8, “But God showed His love for us by sending Christ to die for our sins while we were still sinners.” Jesus died for our sins so that we could have eternal life.

My brothers and sisters, are you struggling with sin. Are you struggling with shame, sickness, trauma, and agony? Come to Jesus. He alone offers you true rest, joy, peace, and above all, a new

life as a child of the Most High God.
