What Does "Eternal" Mean?
There are three key terms to understand when studying Bible: Mortal, Immortal, and Eternal. A solid grasp of these concepts is essential for comprehending many of the Bible's central teachings.
Who is a Mortal?
Mortals are beings with a definitive beginning and end. They are born and will eventually die. Humans are prime examples of mortal beings (Gen 2:7; Genesis 6:3).
Who are Immortals?
Immortals, on the other hand, possess a beginning but no end. They are born but do not die. While the Bible doesn't explicitly label Angels as Immortal, Luke 20:36 suggests they are incapable of death, making them a suitable example of immortal beings.
Who is the Eternal?
The Eternal is a being without beginning or end, the Alpha and Omega (Revelation 22:13). God alone embodies this quality. God alone is Eternal.
Key Differences
-
Mortals and Immortals: Created beings bound by time.
-
The Eternal: The Creator of time, transcending temporal limitations (Psalm 31:15).
-
Divine Authority: The Eternal God is the Judge of both mortals and immortals, possessing the power to end their existence if necessary (Psalm 82:6-7; Ezekiel 18:13-19).
What is Eternal Life? As God is the sole Eternal being, Eternal Life is the very life God himself lives by.
This brief overview provides a foundational understanding of these three terms. For a more in-depth exploration, feel free to contact us or check back for future articles on this website.
